DIAMONDS

Diamonds traditionally are a symbol of longevity, strength, beauty and happiness. They are composed of pure carbon and are the hardest naturally occurring substance known. The word diamond comes from the Greek word 'adamas' which means invincible or unbreakable.

Diamonds are associated with love and marriage and are the most popular gemstone for engagement rings, wedding and eternity rings. However they are also given as gifts on 60th and 75th anniversaries.

The 75th anniversary was traditionally the diamond anniversary, however in 1897 Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee to mark 60 years on the throne so diamonds also became associated with 60th anniversaries.
