Opal is one of the birthstones for October and for Libra (September 22 - October 23). The name comes from the Greek word opallios, which translates to “to see a change in color.” The changing colours come from microscopic silica spheres that diffract light.
Opal’s dramatic play-of-color has inspired writers to compare it to fireworks, galaxies and volcanoes. Ancient Greeks thought opals bestowed the gift of prophesy and protection from disease. Europeans long maintained opal to be a symbol of purity, hope and truth. Traditionally it was also thought to bring good luck to the wearer, and was seen as an overall healer.
The majority of opals come from Australia but they are also found in Mexico, Brazil, Honduras, Ethiopia, the Czech Republic, and parts of the U.S.
