KNOW YOUR GOLD

We are often asked what is the difference between 9ct and 18ct gold, which is the best one to go for and how can you tell the difference?

Pure gold is very soft and therefore not suited to fine jewellery. To make it more durable other alloys are mixed with it.

9ct gold is 37.5% gold, the rest is usually made up of a mix of silver and copper, the amount of each will depend on wether the end result is yellow, rose or white gold.

18ct gold is 75% gold, it is also mixed with silver and copper but in lesser amounts.

When deciding which is best for you, take into consideration cost, 9ct gold is approx half the price of 18ct, and durability.

If you want an heirloom piece of jewellery, to pass on to future generations, we would recommend 18ct. However if you are looking for a piece that can absorb everyday knock and scratches, 9ct is advised.
