Rubies range in colour from rich red to orangy red and a purplish red, the most sought after and expensive colour is know as 'pigeon's blood', a deep red with a hint of purple.
Many cultures regard rubies as a gemstone of kings - associating them with power and wealth. Also, when worn as a talisman on the left hand side of the body, especially near the heart is was thought to protect the wearer and allow them to live peacefully.
