How To Clean Jewellery
Let's keep it simple, you don't need much time, you don't need much money and you certainly don't need the random tik tok hacks such as using dishwater tablets to clean your jewellery!
Start with determining what you are cleaning. Let's break it down into three categories:
Sterling Silver Jewellery
Gold & Platinum Jewellery
Diamond & Gemstone Jewellery
You'll notice I haven't included costume jewellery. Don't bother cleaning that, just put it in the bin when it tarnishes as no amount of polishing will erase the green!
We sell three different products which will work on each of the above categories. Follow the instructions and cleaning your jewellery will be effortless and efficient. It's also a good opportunity to check settings on rings and clasp on necklaces and bracelets.
So for sterling silver jewellery you might find it goes very black/brown if left sitting out or in a box where it may react with the packaging and go dull. It will ALWAYS polish up no matter how black it looks. I would start with the Jewellery Cleansing Foam and use as per the instructions on the bottle. Don't be tempted to leave it on longer, I tried this and it's actually counter productive and wastes time. Then rinse with cold water and pat dry with some kitchen roll. Move on to the Jewellery Wipes and add some elbow grease to really get the shine. Your silver jewellery will be clean, shiny and just like new.
Now, how to clean gold jewellery? The same process as silver. As I mentioned above, it's a good time to check if any links are worn and that the catches are working as they should. In particular, link bracelets can wear easily as they are constantly moving on the wrist. If there is a build up of dirt between these links, use an old toothbrush after you have applied the foam to get in to the nitty gritty.
If you want to clean platinum jewellery, once again the same principle applies however, it can be a bit more difficult to get the shine back on platinum as it is a darker metal and also harder than gold and silver, therefore a professional jeweller may be required to carry out a platinum buff on the piece.
Cleaning your engagement ring is a doddle with our Diamond Dazzle Stik® It really does work magic and again, it gives you a chance to check the claws/prongs are all where they should be. If anything feels loose or worn, contact your jeweller to have it checked.
The jewellery wipes are fantastic to use on all of your jewellery items and will add shine and brilliance to every piece. A good idea would be to wear rubber gloves when using all of these products as black residue will transfer to your hands.
Fine jewellery is very amenable to cleaning and laps up a good polish. The only gemstones to watch out for are pearls, opals and emeralds as they are soft, porous and generally like to be left alone ( a bit like myself on a Friday evening!)
I do hope this blog post gave you a smidgen of info on cleaning your jewellery. Get polishing and enjoy the special pieces that you own.
