Rubies range in colour from rich red to orangy red and a purplish red, the most sought after and expensive colour is know as 'pigeon's blood', a deep red with a hint of purple.

Many cultures regard rubies as a gemstone of kings - associating them with power and wealth. Also, when worn as a talisman on the left hand side of the body, especially near the heart is was thought to protect the wearer and allow them to live peacefully.

Desire for rubies is just as great today as it always has been. Because of it's colour it is seen as a symbol of love and passion, making a ruby the ideal romantic gift.
