Rubies are the birthstone for July and Cancer (June 21 to July 22). They are also associated with 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries.
From pink to pigeon blood red, rubies have been one of the most significant coloured gemstones throughout history. In the Bible they are associated with beauty and wisdom, ancient Hindus believed those who offered rubies to the god Krishna were reborn as emperors and European royalty wore them to signify wealth, wisdom, health and success in love.
Ruby comes from the Latin word 'ruber' which means 'red'. Consisting of the mineral corundum, they can vary in colour from pink to a deep red, all other colours of corundum gemstone are sapphires.
